!China's $1 Trillion-Plus Trade Surplus

A figure monumental enough to be etched into the annals of China's foreign trade history has emerged—in the first 11 months of 2025, China’s merchandise trade surplus surpassed $1 trillion for the first time, setting a new record. Against the complex backdrop of a surging anti-globalization wave, escalating international conflicts, and rising tariff barriers, China’s foreign trade not only avoided decline but also achieved counter-trend growth. This marks not just a triumph in numbers, but also a testament to the global competitiveness of Chinese manufacturing and brands.

China's foreign trade, once heavily reliant on Europe and the United States, has undergone a structural transformation. In the first 11 months of 2025, exports to the U.S. fell by 18.3% year-on-year, while exports to ASEAN grew by 14.6%, and exports to Africa surged by 27.2%. Markets in Latin America and the Middle East also maintained steady growth. This diversified trade pattern reflects a significant reduction in China's reliance on any single market. The rise of emerging markets has further strengthened China's resilience in global trade.

For those in the foreign trade industry, finding the right market means half the battle is won. Today, let's break down two of the most promising emerging markets worth exploring—Africa and the Middle East!

The African market has experienced a breakthrough year, emerging as the world's fastest-growing hotspot for foreign trade in 2025! In the first 11 months, China's total trade with Africa reached 2.25 trillion yuan, surging 18.7% year-on-year. Exports to Africa amounted to 1.44 trillion yuan, with a remarkable growth rate of 27.2%, demonstrating vibrant market activity and significant growth potential.

What products do African countries import?

Infrastructure-related Products:Driven by Africa’s strong infrastructure demand, electromechanical goods constitute the dominant category in the continent’s imports from China. Among these, five infrastructure-linked segments—machinery & equipment, electrical machinery, automobiles, ships, and iron & steel products—collectively represent around 55% of Africa’s electromechanical imports from China. Together, they accounted for 75% of the year’s export growth to Africa, serving as the key engine behind trade expansion.

New Energy Products:Against the backdrop of Africa’s accelerating green energy transition, China’s exports of new energy products to the region have surged. The "New Three" categories—lithium-ion batteries, solar panels, and electric vehicles—all recorded double-digit year-on-year growth.

Labor-intensive Products:Labor-intensive goods such as plastics, rubber, furniture, textiles, apparel, and footwear still retain a share in Africa’s imports from China. However, due to factors including the relocation of low-end industries from China, local industrial protection policies in Africa, and rising competition from regions like ASEAN, their share has been gradually declining, with slower growth rates.

Opportunity Countries

Nigeria:Against the backdrop of Africa's overall high growth, Nigeria has demonstrated particularly outstanding performance, with its imports from China surging by over 60%. The country has become the largest African market for Chinese tires and construction machinery.

South Africa:Accounting for 15.7% of Africa's total trade volume, South Africa boasts a strong domestic consumer market. It shows particularly high demand in sectors such as automobiles, electronics, and machinery equipment.

The Middle East serves not only as a critical corridor connecting the East and the West but also as a key node in the Belt and Road Initiative. Leveraging the dividends of energy transition, the Middle East market has become a stable driver of foreign trade growth. Taking key countries as examples, China’s exports to Saudi Arabia maintained steady growth in the first 11 months of 2025, while bilateral trade with the United Arab Emirates reached $76.93 billion in the first three quarters, demonstrating immense potential.

Opportunity Countries

The United Arab Emirates: Largest Export Destination for Chinese Automobiles! From January to November, exports reached 299,600 vehicles, a growth of 55.8%, with new energy vehicles accounting for 12% of the total at 52,000 units.

Saudi Arabia: Benefiting from the energy transition under "Vision 2030," automobile exports grew by 30.7%, while exports of photovoltaic and energy storage equipment surged by 45%. Additionally, with its globally leading internet penetration rate and a rapidly expanding e-commerce market, Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the most robust growth drivers in the Middle East.

A trade surplus of one trillion dollars is not the end goal but a new starting point for the high-quality development of China's foreign trade. For every professional in this field, this represents both an unprecedented opportunity of the times and a call to address future challenges with deeper insights and more forward-thinking actions.

Be Vigilant Against Risks:

Expanding Surplus May Intensify Trade Frictions

A massive trade surplus could heighten vigilance in certain countries, potentially escalating risks such as tariff barriers and anti-dumping investigations. Foreign trade enterprises must proactively assess policy trends in key markets, avoid over-reliance on any single market, and build more resilient business networks.

Embrace Change:

Firmly Focus on "Emerging Markets"

The global demand landscape is being reshaped. It is essential to actively reduce dependence on markets with sluggish growth and allocate more resources to emerging markets with rapid expansion, such as Africa and the Middle East. The infrastructure development, energy transition, and consumption upgrade demands in these Belt and Road partner regions align closely with the strengths of China's supply chain, making them a definitive axis for future growth.
