Sizzling Accra

There is a major city in Africa that is closest to the 0° meridian and 0° latitude.

It is Accra, the capital of Ghana in West Africa.

This city is not only warm all year round but also a hot spot in Africa that attracts global investors.

1

Accra's "HOT": A Blend of Humidity and Vitality

Located in southeastern Ghana, Accra borders the Gulf of Guinea, making it a million-person equatorial hub uniquely positioned where the Equator meets the Prime Meridian.

Unlike the extreme aridity of North Africa’s Sahara Desert, Accra’s "HOT" embodies a blend of humidity and dynamism.

With an average annual temperature above 26°C, the city basks in tropical sunshine year-round, yet alternating rainy and dry seasons create a vibrant, livable environment.

The downpours in the rainy season from March to July are fleeting; the short "light rainy season" from September to October dresses the city in a lush new look; and the hot and dry season from November to March the following year makes this coastal city a mecca for global travelers in pursuit of sunshine.

This unique climate sustains Ghana’s economic backbone: as the world’s second-largest cocoa producer, 60% of its beans flow from Accra’s surrounding farms to Tema Port before reaching global markets.

Accra’s "HOT" Economic Pulse

Accra’s "HOT" stems not just from its climate but also its booming economy.

According to Oxford Economics’ 2025 Global Cities Index, Accra ranks as West Africa’s top city, 4th in Africa, and 387th globally among 1,000 cities.

As the first West African nation to break free from colonialism, Ghana built its economy on gold, mining, and cocoa. Its GDP surpassed $220 billion in 2024, maintaining over 6% growth for five consecutive years.

Accra—Ghana’s economic, cultural, and industrial heart—contributed 34–39% of the national GDP (2015–2020 data).

Dawa Industrial Zone

Services dominate Accra’s economy, averaging 63% of GDP, while manufacturing accounts for 20.5%.

Accra's "HOT" is also reflected in its investment opportunities.

Accra serves as a key West African transport hub, home to Kotoka International Airport (a major West African aviation gateway) and Tema Port (Africa’s largest artificial seaport).

As a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and gateway to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Accra channels trade and investment across the region.

Accra has a permanent population of approximately 2.5 million, with 40% being young people under 25, and the middle class expanding at an annual rate of 8.3% (Ghana Statistical Service).

The proportion of foreign population is significant, with immigrants from neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Togo active in the business sector.

Accra boasts a high-quality labor force and a diverse consumer market.

Ghana attracted $123.06 million in FDI in Q1 2024 (Ghana Investment Promotion Centre), a 16% YoY increase from $106.02 million.

The Greater Accra Region (centered on Accra) captured 75% of new national projects, cementing its status as an investment hotspot.

Manufacturing is Accra’s top FDI magnet, claiming 42% of new foreign projects in H1 2024—mainly in building materials, auto parts, and food processing.

For example, China’s Haian Rubber Group invested $3 million in April 2025 to establish an Accra subsidiary for mining tire sales/services.

Emerging sectors like renewable energy, real estate, infrastructure, and digital economy (5G, e-commerce) are gaining momentum.

Accra’s "HOT" Digital Economy

As of 2025, Ghana’s national internet penetration reached 69.8%, with Greater Accra leading as the digital core.

The government’s "One District, One Factory" initiative accelerated digital transformation, achieving 5G coverage in major cities (including Accra) by late 2024.

Backed by robust internet access and a massive youth population, e-commerce thrives in Accra.

Ghana’s e-commerce revenue hit $638 million in 2021 and is projected to reach $1.335 billion by 2025, with users surging to 11.5 million (33.4% penetration).

Accra drives over 60% of national e-commerce transactions, dominated by electronics, fashion, and cosmetics.

Female-Led Marketplace:

Makola Market—one of Africa’s largest open-air markets—is almost entirely run by women traders.

Designed to empower women economically, it sells everything from fresh produce to traditional crafts like Kente cloth.

Clash of Industry and Ecology:

Agbogbloshie in Accra ranks among the world’s largest e-waste dumps, receiving millions of tons of discarded electronics from developed nations yearly.

Locals manually dismantle devices to recover metals, but face severe heavy metal pollution.

This site has drawn global attention as a microcosm of development versus sustainability debates.

Whether for sun-chasing travelers or opportunity-seeking investors, Accra captivates the world with its distinct allure and promise.
